Recap: The Art of Marketing

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending my first #TheArtOf conference and join a dynamic community of thought leaders and learn from the crème de le crème of the trade. The subject of discussion for the full-day event was about marketing and all that comes with it – including the social, psychological and physical impacts it has on our personal and professional lives.

Granted I thought the day would consist of fluff content that I could attain from a quick Google search (ironically so), I was pleasantly surprised to find the information not only engaging from start to finish, but helpful for my personal and professional development.

Here are some lessons I took away from The Art of Marketing Conference

  1. Do things differently and stay away from the “this is how we’ve always done it” mentality.
  2. Lead the conversation, not just be part of it.
  3. Everyone can be an artist and create content.
  4. Constantly reinvent yourself. After all, if Barbie can change, so can you.
  5. Build a narrative with a bold and brave tone of voice.
  6. Learn the rules and then find ways to break them.

But my favorite lesson of the day came from Lady Gaga’s former music manager and CEO of Atom Factory, Troy Carter. He told the story of his struggles and failures before finding success bravely and boldly, and shared his mantra  – “you can’t fall off the floor” – to a crowd of hopeful young minds with dreams like that of his own. From starting off as an apprentice to the right hand of some of the biggest names in the world, Troy revealed the secret ingredients that led to his success: patience, persistence and his mother’s support. With such raw emotions and a backstory that made the crowd roar in applause, it’s no wonder why hundreds flock to The Art Of conferences every year – and why I’ll be going back whenever I get the chance.
